West Royd Map

West Royd sits within the Windhill and Wrose ward, one of the electoral divisions that make up the City of Bradford Metropolitan District in West Yorkshire. The ward takes its name from the districts of Windhill and Wrose, and West Royd is one of several smaller districts drawn within its boundaries, alongside Owlet, Bolton Woods, and Wood End.

The Surrounding Area

The communities grouped within the Windhill and Wrose ward occupy the northern reaches of Bradford, with Windhill and Wrose giving the ward its character and its name. West Royd neighbours these districts as part of a cluster of residential areas that together form a continuous stretch of urban Bradford. Bolton Woods lies to the south-west, while Wood End and Owlet are close companions within the same ward boundary.

Population and Growth

The Windhill and Wrose ward recorded a population of 16,408 in the 2011 census, up from 14,541 at the 2001 census – a notable increase of nearly 2,000 residents over the decade. West Royd contributes to this population as one of the ward’s constituent districts. The ward is represented on Bradford Council by three Labour councillors: Liz Rowe, Susan Hinchcliffe, and Alex Ross-Shaw.

Local Interest

The ward has a modest place in linguistic history. In 1893, scholar Joseph Wright published A Grammar of the Dialect of Windhill, a study of the local speech patterns of the area, reflecting how distinctly rooted these Bradford communities were in their own traditions. The ward also has a number of listed buildings recorded within its boundaries.
