Impressions Gallery Map

Situated on Centenary Square in Bradford, Impressions Gallery is an independent contemporary photography gallery that has been running since November 1972 – making it one of the oldest venues for contemporary photography in Europe. Originally founded in York, the gallery relocated to Bradford in 2007 and has since become a fixture in the city’s cultural life. It operates as a registered charity, funded by Arts Council England and Bradford Metropolitan District Council.

Exhibitions and Publications

The gallery runs a temporary exhibitions programme of around six shows each year, with a particular focus on solo retrospective exhibitions of mid-career photographers alongside occasional group shows. Within the gallery space there is also a photography bookshop. Impressions Gallery publishes its own books and catalogues – often produced to accompany exhibitions – either independently or in partnership with publishers such as Dewi Lewis Publishing and Photoworks. Among the photographers whose work it has published are Melanie Friend, Anna Fox, Trish Morrissey, Tessa Bunney, and Stefan Ruiz.

History and Archive

Impressions Gallery was founded by Val Williams and Andrew Sproxton, opening in York with two exhibitions in November 1972: Butlin’s by the Sea by Martin Parr and Daniel Meadows, and Whitby by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe. Both Parr and Meadows continued to show work at the gallery throughout the 1970s. After moving to Colliergate in 1976 and then to Castlegate in 1992, the gallery made its final move to Bradford in 2007. In 2013, the gallery’s archive – covering its entire history from 1972 – was transferred to the National Media Museum in Bradford, where it became part of the National Photography Collection. Anne McNeill has served as director since 2000.
