Saltaire Collection Map

The Saltaire Collection is a museum located in Saltaire, the UNESCO World Heritage Site village on the northern edge of Bradford. Built in the nineteenth century by industrialist Titus Salt, Saltaire is one of the best-preserved model Victorian mill villages in the world, and the museum sits within this carefully maintained historic setting. The village is served by Saltaire railway station on the Wharfedale and Airedale lines, making it straightforward to reach from both Bradford and Leeds.

What the Museum Holds

The Saltaire Collection preserves and presents objects, documents, and artefacts relating to the history of Saltaire itself, from the lives of the mill workers who once lived in its terraced streets to the ambitions of Sir Titus Salt in creating the settlement. Visitors can learn about the social history behind what was designed as a self-contained community, complete with housing, schools, and public baths, with no public houses. The museum website at saltairecollection.org provides further detail on current exhibitions and opening arrangements.

Visiting Saltaire

Saltaire as a whole rewards a full afternoon visit. The village’s grid of stone-built streets, the Victoria Hall, and the Salts Mill – which now houses a permanent David Hockney gallery – are all within easy walking distance of the Saltaire Collection. The River Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal run alongside the village, with pleasant towpath walks heading in both directions.
